About the museum
The Saarländische Psychiatriemuseum (Saarland Psychiatry Museum) is located on the grounds of the Klinikum Merzig. The clinic was built in 1876 as a provincial asylum and later operated as the Landeskrankenhaus Merzig (Merzig State Hospital); at the end of the 20th century, the institution's operations were ended.
The museum opened in 2004 in 200 square meters in the attic. It was created not by museum professionals but by doctors and psychologists from the clinic, who opted for an artistic, contemplative staging instead of a classic documentation. Five "Bilder" (images) are displayed in three rooms, including the "Raum mit dem leeren Feld" (Room with the Empty Field), which commemorates the patients, as well as picture sequences on changing treatment approaches, well-known people with mental illnesses, and the history of the Merzig clinic with photos, newspaper reports, and audio and film documents.
The displays are continuously changed and developed further together with schools and universities in the region. On the former clinic cemetery above the hospital complex, the "Park der Andersdenkenden" (Park of Those Who Think Differently) commemorates the patients buried there.
