About the museum

Schloss Fellenberg goes back to Wilhelm Tell von Fellenberg, a native Swiss who in 1829 married a daughter of François Boch-Buschmann. In 1858 he moved his residence from Mettlach to Merzig and, according to tradition, had a dilapidated mill converted into a stately manor house. With its annex of hewn sandstone, oriels, and turrets, it is considered a vivid example of 19th-century architecture in Merzig. As the marriage remained childless, the property passed to the von Boch family.

From 1912 to 1919 the district rented the castle as the residence of the district administrators, in 1934 it bought it and set up a nursing home; later hospital wards were added, including a maternity ward. Since 1980 the building has been used as a museum. After an extensive renovation by the district of Merzig-Wadern from 1997 to 2000, it reopened in September 2000 with an exhibition on the Saarschleife.

The permanent regional history exhibition on the upper floor, with rooms on folklore, sacred art, industry, literature, and painting, was dissolved in July 2017. Since then the house has shown temporary exhibitions on the first floor on the art of the Saar-Lor-Lux Greater Region and on local history, incorporating pieces from the former collection. The sponsor is the Kulturstiftung Merzig-Wadern. The museum includes the Kreisheimatarchiv (district local history archive), a reference library, and the Paul-Schneider-Skulpturen-Park in the castle garden; every two years the house awards the Monika-von-Boch Prize for photography.
