The museum goes back to the collecting passion of Dr. Kurt Fuchs, chief physician of the former rheumatism sanatorium. After the war he gathered decommissioned equipment from salt production and the spa operation, as well as photos and documents, and on October 18, 1953 he opened the Salzmuseum (Salt Museum) in three rooms of a children's health home.
Since 1971 it has been housed in the "Altes Salzamt" (Old Salt Office), a half-timbered building from 1759 that served as the office of the Grand Ducal saltworks and was a district court from 1879 to 1944. The building closed during the period of political change; it was renovated from 1993 to 1998. Because the municipality could no longer finance operations afterwards, committed citizens founded a local heritage association, which today runs the museum as the Kultur- und Heimatverein Bad Sülze (Culture and Heritage Association Bad Sülze).
The permanent exhibition "Salz, das weiße Gold" tells the story of salt production from its first mention in 1243 to the early 20th century, and of the spa history since 1822, with models, photos, tools and small dioramas. In the museum courtyard, an active boiling house, a smithy, a wheelwright's shop and a laundry house show crafts as in an open-air museum. In the museum garden stand a model of a brine-graduation tower (Gradierwerk) and the dahlia garden.
