About the museum
When the Gnoien local heritage association was founded in 1993, the wish arose for a small local history room for the town. A working group took up the project, and it is mainly thanks to the commitment of master tailor Alfred Brehm that the opening succeeded in 1995, the year of Mecklenburg's 1000th anniversary.
The collection keeps growing: residents, but also people who have moved away from Gnoien, donate items, sometimes as loans. On view are, among other things, Russian dancing boots from the 1830s, hairdressing tools, old handicraft tools and historic pictures. Since the move to larger premises, the house has several permanent exhibitions.
Themes include the town chronicle (for example Jewish life in Gnoien and the mayors of the town), emigrants and their descendants, and traditional crafts. Guests also come from the former West German states and even from the USA to trace their ancestors.
