Lifestyle in der DDR

About the museum

The palace and fortress complex in Senftenberg was built in the 16th century on the foundations of a medieval castle. It was meant to secure the border of the Electorate of Saxony against Brandenburg. Today it is regarded as the only fortress in Germany still surrounded by such a massive earthen rampart; on the fortress walk, visitors can explore the powder tower, bastions and fortress gate.

For more than a hundred years the palace has housed a museum. The permanent exhibitions tell the story of the fortress, the everyday life of a Lusatian small town from the "Ackerbürger" to the "Staatsbürger", and the region's transformation from a mining landscape into a lake district. A historic classroom shows lessons around 1920.

Since 2009 the palace has also been home to the permanent exhibition of the Kunstsammlung Lausitz. The collection has been built up since the mid-1980s and comprises more than 2,500 works by more than 130 artists with ties to Lusatia. The palace is run by the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district.
