About the museum
The orangery in the Putbus park was built in 1824 as a greenhouse, reportedly to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It received its present form in 1853 from the Berlin architect August Stüler. Until 1945 it served mainly to acclimatize exotic trees for the park and to overwinter potted plants; celebrations also took place there. After the war, resettled families lived in the house for a time; from 1973 it housed the town library and the spa administration, and there were early exhibitions.
The KulturStiftung Rügen was founded at the end of the 1990s as a civil-law foundation based in Putbus. The impetus came from publisher and art connoisseur Hans Marquardt, whose network and passion for collecting benefited the island's cultural life. Since January 2011 the orangery has shown works from the foundation's collection as well as changing exhibitions; the house sees itself as the art exhibition center of the island of Rügen.
The collection consists mainly of donations of East German art: prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs by artists from Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden, Halle and Chemnitz, among other cities, whose roots often lie in classical modernism and Expressionism. There are also opening receptions (vernissages), concerts and readings.
