About the museum
The building on the edge of Putbus Palace Park was built in 1830 at the request of Princess Luise zu Putbus as housing for exotic monkeys, which could be watched in a tall round wire aviary. In 1854 it was converted into a park lodge and served as the administrative office of the County of Putbus until 1945; afterwards apartments were created inside.
The Doll and Toy Museum opened here on April 1, 1994. Its founder, Karin Ernst, moved to Rügen after running a junk shop and an auction house near Cologne, and converted the former monkey house into a museum and café.
The collection shows how play has changed over three centuries: dolls from simple cloth dolls to French fashion dolls, teddy bears, toy shops, tin soldiers, ships, model trains and technical toys such as a chain carousel. Each room is devoted to a different era, and in summer there is also music by the swan pond.
