Pupils of the Gesamtschule Brakel explore how we live today and how we will live in the future. Objects, art and installations connect with digital living worlds (theme year “Home, sweet home” of the Museumsinitiative OWL). In the Alte Waage.
About the museum
The Brakel City Museum opened in 1997 on the upper floor of the Haus des Gastes (Visitors’ House) on the market square, a historic farmhouse that has belonged to the town since 1980. After several location considerations, including the Haus Legge acquired in 1991, the choice fell on this building. The project was strongly supported by the Heimat- und Museumsverein (local heritage and museum association). Since November 1996, Dirk Brassel has served as the municipal cultural officer and museum educator for the house.
The collection was founded on donations from schools, the town administration and Brakel families. The main impetus for founding the museum was the extensive collection of Walter Kreimeyer, which had previously been on display in his private “Ückernmuseum”.
On about 100 square meters, the museum shows the town’s development from Neolithic settlement in the Nethe valley to the present: archaeological finds, replicas of medieval charters, Baroque cut glass, farm tools, paintings and views of the town. In-depth topics include the Stone Age, the medieval heyday, witch persecution and industrialization. Temporary exhibitions take place in the “Alte Waage” (Old Scales House), an exhibition hall that belongs to the museum. The house also publishes the “Brakeler Schriftenreihe” (Brakel book series) on town history.
