About the museum

The museum is in the heart of Gardelegen on Rathausplatz, in a Renaissance building from 1685, the former Löwenapotheke (Lion Pharmacy). The house is also the seat of the tourist information office of the unified municipality. Parts of the historic pharmacy fittings and pharmaceutical equipment have been preserved and can be seen; old arches and cross vaults make the building architecturally interesting as well.

In the basement, with a barrel vault from the 15th century, an exhibition recalls the town’s more than seven-hundred-year brewing tradition, the cooper’s trade and hop cultivation, which paved the way for Gardelegen’s membership in the Hanseatic League. Brewing equipment from the 1930s is considered the showpiece.

One section is dedicated to the town’s most famous son, the humorist Otto Reutter (1870–1931): in June 2024 a Reutter room with display cases and listening and picture stations opened on the gallery floor. The former pharmacist’s apartment on the upper floor has been set up as a gallery for art exhibitions since 2013. In House 2 of the town administration, a small permanent exhibition also shows Gardelegen’s button production.
