About the museum
The building on the Dönstedter Straße is the oldest school building in Hundisburg. Lord of the manor Johann Friedrich von Alvensleben had it built in 1704 as a plain half-timbered structure. Besides the teacher's apartment, it contained only one schoolroom of 30 square meters for 44 children at the time. As the number of schoolchildren rose, the room was enlarged several times, and by the end of the 19th century two more school buildings had been constructed; the Rektorat remained the only one of the old schools to survive.
In the classroom, the cross-mullioned windows, the oiled plank floor and the teacher's desk made in 1887 are still in their original places. In 1988 a school museum was set up here, initially only in the historic classroom. It has since been run as a branch of the Museum Haldensleben.
After renovation and extension completed by 2015, the entire listed building belongs to the museum. The upper floor shows the living quarters of the Senff teacher family, with furniture acquired from 1906 onward. In the schoolyard, an outhouse and a pigsty continue the route, and the historically styled Rektorat garden is also open to visitors.
