About the museum
The Heimatstube is on the ground floor of the former district court at Neustadtstraße 19. The building is also the birthplace of the art historian and director general of the Berlin museums, Wilhelm von Bode. When the court building was converted in 1992, rooms for a local history exhibition were already planned; according to the town chronicle, a Heimatstube in the town is already mentioned in 1912.
Local history enthusiasts from Calvörde assembled the collection over years of work, and the exhibition first opened on May 7, 1994. The association founded in 1994 as the Förderkreis der Heimatstube (support group of the Heimatstube) has been called Heimatverein Calvörde e. V. since 2001 and continues to expand the display step by step with new exhibits.
On display are commercial, agricultural and craft tools, for example from field and dairy work, carpentry and shoemaking, as well as for home slaughtering. Also shown are photographs of old craft businesses, furnishings and household appliances, a reconstructed general store, medical instruments, fire documents from 1780 and a model of the town based on photographs.
