Museum Haldensleben
Regional museum in Haldensleben with city and regional history, Biedermeier culture, the Riding Roland, and part of the estate of the Brothers Grimm.
About the museum
The Museum Haldensleben was founded in 1910. Its foundation was the collection of the local Aller-Verein (Aller association) and the prehistoric and early historic finds of the municipal secondary school. At first only two rooms were available in a late Neoclassical school building on Breiter Gang, completed in 1866; the museum is still housed there today.
In the Second World War, the collection was moved out for safekeeping and suffered great losses. In 1953, the museum, until then run by the town, passed into the care of the district and was now able to use the entire building. Today it belongs to the district of Börde and, together with the Museum Wolmirstedt and the Börde-Museum Burg Ummendorf, forms a museum network.
A special feature is a partial estate of the Brothers Grimm and their family, which a granddaughter of Wilhelm Grimm gave to the museum in 1963 and 1974 – with furniture, clothing, busts, documents, and parts of the family library. In addition, the museum shows archaeological finds of the region, city history with the original Riding Roland of 1528, ceramics from the Haldensleben manufactories, and middle-class and rural living culture of the Biedermeier period.
Two half-timbered houses with demonstration workshops, a chicken yard, and a flower garden in the museum courtyard round out the museum into a small open-air museum. The museum also includes the Schulmuseum Hundisburg (school museum) and the Haus der anderen Nachbarn in the former synagogue.
