About the museum
The half-timbered house in Warmbronn was built in 1780 as a typical Swabian dwelling with a vaulted cellar and a rubble-stone base. The farmer and poet Christian Wagner was born here in 1835 and lived in the two parlours on the ground floor until his death in 1918. His children subsequently preserved the rooms as a private memorial.
In the 1960s the property fell increasingly into disrepair, and in the early 1970s demolition in favour of a supermarket threatened. In response, the Christian Wagner Society was founded in 1972, collected donations and was given the house in 1974 by its then owner. After protests from literary circles, the city of Leonberg finally took over the building, had it renovated and opened it in 1983 as a poet's museum.
On the ground floor, the parlour, bedroom and kitchen can be seen with their original furnishings. The exhibition "Christian Wagner – Life and Work", opened in 2018, shows around 180 objects, mostly originals, and includes listening stations with poems. In the attic is the archive with Wagner's estate, and behind the house a farmhouse garden with plants from his poems. The society looks after the house and regularly invites visitors to readings and events.
