About the museum
The main building of the museum was built in 1616 in Leonberg as a parsonage. In 1785 it was dismantled there and rebuilt in Gebersheim. It was used as a farmhouse until 1986; the last resident, Wilhelm Häcker, died that year. As a result, one of the last large farms of the Strohgäu region has been preserved.
In May 1995 the farm opened as a farmhouse museum. When the city of Leonberg wanted to close the house in 2005 for financial reasons, a friends' association was formed. It has supported museum operations ever since and has turned the house into a cultural meeting place with numerous events. In addition to the residential house and the exhibition and event barn, the site now includes a bakehouse, a historic village forge, and a livestock scale in the neighborhood.
Under the guiding idea “A House Tells (Its) Story,” each room stands for a different era: the cowshed for the years around 1800, the horse stable for World War I, the kitchen for the 1920s, a small room for childhood under National Socialism and during World War II, plus the bedroom of a village mayor (Schultheiß) from 1870/71 and the living room of the last resident. The exhibition barn is devoted to grain cultivation, threshing, and the technology of plow and harrow; the outdoor grounds include a farm garden, and a Göpelhaus (horse-powered threshing house) completes the ensemble.
A memorial commemorates the writer and pastor Albrecht Goes, who worked in Gebersheim from 1938 to 1953, and his wife Elisabeth, who from 1944 offered refuge to persecuted Jews in the parsonage and was honored in 1991 as “Righteous Among the Nations” for doing so. Because renovation work on the main buildings is due, the museum is currently closed; events take place in the museum garden.
