Stadtmuseum Lippstadt
Municipal museum in the Rococo townhouse Palais Rose on Lippstadt's market square; currently showing changing exhibitions due to the storage move and planned renovation.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1928 as the Kreisheimatmuseum for the then district of Lippstadt; collecting had been going on since around 1900. It is housed in the Palais Rose on the market square, a townhouse from the mid-17th century that the legal councillor Johann Conrad Rose had remodeled in the 1760s. The Rococo stucco ceilings of 1770 on the upper floor date from this time and make the building itself an exhibit.
After the municipal reorganization, the museum passed to the city of Lippstadt and is now called the Stadtmuseum. The collection is broad: prehistory and early history, city history up to the French Revolution, rural life, bourgeois domestic culture, the municipal art collection, toys, and an extensive collection of fans. A mayor's scepter from the early 16th century stands out.
Since 1993 the museum has also used a gallery on the first floor of the Historic Town Hall for special exhibitions. An architectural-historical survey and a comprehensive renovation are planned for the Palais Rose, and in 2025 an architectural competition was also held for an additional building. The collection is currently moving to a new storage facility, and the building mainly shows changing exhibitions and invites visitors to free workshops on Saturdays.
