About the museum

The house on the market square dates from 1688, when it was built as a Pflegeamt (regional administrative office) with a residence. In the 18th century it changed owners several times and continued to serve as a Pflegeamt. From 1842 it was a convent of the Poor School Sisters and a school building, until 1959.

In 1967 the museum opened, at the same time as a "Haus der Heimat" (house of the homeland). In 2004 the building was converted, extended and reorganized. Since then it has been looked after by the museum working group of the town of Pleystein.

The departments include town history, middle-class life around 1920, and a culture hall. The focus is on mineralogy, with rare phosphate minerals from the pegmatite of Pleystein-Hagendorf. The mineral collection was redesigned in 2013 from the Stiftung Ferdinand Lehners (Ferdinand Lehner Foundation). Since 2012 the house has also been an information point of the Geopark Bayern-Böhmen.
