About the museum

The Weiden town museum dates back to 1896, when the senior regional court councillor Albert Vierling founded a trade sample collection. In 1902 town archivist Hans Wagner and municipal councillor Christian Aichinger expanded it into a local history museum. At first the collection was housed in the old Fleischbank (meat market), and from 1915 in the former hospital building on the Unterer Markt.

Since 1979 the museum has been housed in the Kulturzentrum Hans Bauer, the so-called Alte Schulhaus (old schoolhouse). The imposing building originally served as a storehouse of the Altalmosenstiftung (old alms foundation) of the cloth makers' guild and was completed in 1566. From the 16th century onward it also housed the German school and the Latin school. Today the building is shared by the museum, the Galerie im Alten Schulhaus, the town archive and the Tachauer Heimatmuseum.

The exhibition covers themes of town history, such as objects from churches and chapels, and crafts. Staged rooms such as the living quarters of a craftsman's family with a black kitchen, as well as Biedermeier and Rococo rooms, show earlier life in Weiden. Two memorial rooms commemorate the composer Max Reger, including a square piano and his death mask.
