About the museum
On August 5, 1956, the city of Weiden took over the patronage of the population of the city and district of Tachau. Shortly afterward, an association was founded to preserve the cultural heritage of the region, and over the years it gathered numerous objects. Since 1978 the collection has been housed in the Kulturzentrum Hans Bauer, a 16th-century Renaissance building.
The Tachau Heimatstube (local heritage room) was greatly expanded from 1990, and from 2000 it was organized and inventoried. After the city of Weiden installed a gallery in the historic roof structure, the homeland association opened the newly designed museum in fall 2011 under the title "Heimat – Vertreibung – Integration".
The permanent exhibition uses individual life stories to show how historical upheavals shaped people's everyday lives. Labels are bilingual, in German and Czech; a museum education concept from 2012 makes the house a place of learning for school classes.
