About the museum

The Heimatverein Altenstadt (local history association), founded in 1990, collected documents and objects on local history over many years. In 1996 it set up the Anton-Wurzer-Stube in the old forester's house, dedicated to the local poet Anton Wurzer. As the rooms became too small, the wish grew for a proper museum in a historic building.

It was found in the old school and sexton's house on Pfarrplatz. A school had already stood on this site around 1609; the present building was erected anew in 1793 and belonged to the church. The municipality bought the house in 1920; later it housed the municipal chancellery and then a doctor's practice, and most recently it served as residential space. After the last tenant moved out in 2006, it was converted over roughly three years of work and opened as a museum in 2014.

The exhibition covers everything from prehistory and early history through the Middle Ages to the 21st century. It incorporates the old parish church, school history, life in the districts and the history of the local glassworks. The municipality sponsors the museum; the Heimatverein looks after it.
