About the museum
The city museum is located next to the St. Georg parish church, in a former 17th-century schoolhouse. The city had the building extensively renovated over about four years and opened it to the public as a museum in 1989.
The exhibition is divided into four sections: glass, crafts and trades, treasures from middle-class homes, churches and monasteries, and town history. The glass section is especially distinctive, since Neustadt is known for its glassmakers and glass cutters as the "City of Lead Crystal". On display are, among other things, an approximately one-meter-high overlay vase in gold ruby and further examples of local glass art.
The museum also tells of the work and daily life of residents from the 16th to the 19th century, of popular piety and of famous sons of the town. A historical Rauchkuchl (smoke kitchen) and an annual nativity scene complete the tour; in addition there are changing exhibitions.
