About the museum
The Templerhaus in Amorbach has nothing to do with the Knights Templar; the name goes back to a local description from 1856. The half-timbered upper floor was built in 1291, and the tower-like stone base beneath it may be up to 100 years older. This makes the house the oldest surviving half-timbered house in Bavaria.
At the end of the 13th century, the estate belonged to the "Rüden" of Collenberg, a noble family in the circle of the Lords of Dürn. Later it passed to the lower nobility; from the 16th century, craftsmen and tradespeople lived here. Remains of a chimney system were found in the stone base.
In 1981 the city of Amorbach acquired the property. Together with the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege), it was examined, documented, and restored; for this work the city received the Europa Nostra Medal. Today the house is a museum showing the building technology and domestic culture of the late Middle Ages, along with fragmentary room decorations from the 16th century.
