About the museum
The Stadt- und Wallfahrtsmuseum is located near the pilgrimage basilica in the center of Walldürn. Across four floors, it documents the history of the town, from Roman times through the pilgrimage and local trades up to the present day.
The building was erected in 1588 by Valentin Stumpf as a Renaissance patrician house. Its earlier name, "Zum güldenen Engel", suggests it was once an inn; inscriptions dating from 1598 were uncovered in the large room on the upper floor.
For several decades the house belonged to the Ehemann family, after whom it is still called the "Ehemannsches Haus" today. The family ran a candle-making workshop that produced candles and wax goods for the pilgrimage; tools of this craft are displayed as museum pieces. Detailed displays are also devoted to folk and local history, Roman times and the "Zum Heiligen Blut" pilgrimage.
