About the museum
The Schramlhaus is a four-sided farmstead (Vierseithof) built around 1700 and named after its last owners, Maria and Otto Schraml. It is considered the oldest farm property in the town of Freyung and, because of its open location, was spared from the great market fire of 1872, which claimed the church and 42 properties. In earlier times the farm also included a carpentry workshop alongside agriculture.
Today the local history museum in the house, stable, and barn (Stadl) shows the history of the former Wolfsteiner Land. The exhibition is divided into local and town history, covering clearing and settlement, the Passau prince-bishops and the salt trade, rural domestic culture with costume, tools, and old crafts, sacred folk art, and a collection of more than one hundred reverse-glass paintings from schools in the Bavarian-Bohemian border region. There are also decorative and everyday glassware from local production and a miniature model exhibition.
In the garden, the theme trail "Leben und Handwerk am Goldenen Steig" (Life and Crafts on the Golden Steig) explains salt trade, blacksmithing, and inns on seven panels. Since 2018 a restored grain chest (Troadkasten) in log construction from about 1800 has stood there as well. In the same year, a costume piece from the collection was honored by the Free State of Bavaria as a "Heimatschatz" (local treasure).
