About the museum
Wolfstein Castle above the Saußbach was built around 1200 by Passau Prince-Bishop Wolfger von Erla as a fortress; later it also served as a bishop's hunting lodge and administrative seat. It took on its present form as a Renaissance castle in the late 16th century under Prince-Bishop Urban von Trenbach. In the 18th century the interiors were renewed, and in 1779 the Passau painter Joseph Widemann decorated the Prince's Room with a Rococo cycle of paintings. After secularization the building became a regional court (Landgericht) in 1805, later a district office, and from 1938 a Landratsamt (district administration office).
After a thorough renovation from 1986 to 1989, the Hunting and Fishing Museum moved into the castle in 1989. The Galerie Wolfstein, the first art collection owned by a district in Bavaria, has been showing its holdings there since 1982. The museum was redesigned and reopened in October 2014 under the name "Jagd Land Fluss".
The exhibition covers hunting, including hunting methods, weapons, hunters' jargon and poaching, as well as fishing and life in and around the water of the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests. Interactive stations invite visitors to try things out. The house also runs an information point on the Bavarian Forest and Šumava national parks and the Bavarian Forest Nature Park. The museum is run by the district of Freyung-Grafenau.
