About the museum
The museum combines two collections in the former poor house and hospital of the town, the "Spital" on Spitalstraße. The snuff section is considered the first snuff museum in the world and shows around 1,500 containers, from the glass "Schmaiglasl" of the Bavarian Forest to boxes from China and horn containers made of buffalo horn from Africa. It also commemorates the Glasschinden (glass-making craft) and the Bogenstätter Tabakfabrik (tobacco factory).
The town museum section leads through the history of Grafenau: an old general store, a historic town pharmacy and an old school classroom, plus forgotten crafts, the royal Bavarian civic guard, the Goldhauben (gold-cap) customs, and the Säumer (packhorse drivers) and salt trade. The Spital building itself was attacked by the Panduren (Pandours) in 1742. Next to it stands the small Spitalkirche (hospital church).
