About the museum
The house on the market square was formerly Lohsa's school, where Jan Arnošt Smoler spent his youth. On January 18, 1994, the support association "Begegnungsstätte Zejler-Smoler-Haus Lohsa e.V." was founded with the aim of creating a place for German and Sorbian culture here. The municipality renovated the building with support from the district of Bautzen and EU funds, and handed it over to the association for use in July 1999.
On the upper floor there are four exhibition rooms for permanent and special exhibitions. The permanent exhibitions honor the pastor and poet Handrij Zejler, who worked in Lohsa from 1835 to 1872, and the publisher and folklorist Jan Arnošt Smoler. Further rooms are devoted to important personalities of the village and to local history, for example the villages that vanished because of lignite mining.
On the ground floor there is a club room for lectures, readings, and concerts, as well as the municipal library.
