About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Kourounochori was opened in July 2010 in Kourounochori, in the area of Melanes on Naxos. It serves as a collection and as an information centre for visitors and belongs to the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades. It is housed in the western hall, 50 square metres in area, of the village’s former primary school, a typical school building of the 1950s, which the Municipality of Naxos granted to the Ministry of Culture for 99 years.
The exhibition includes marble sculptures, whole or fragmentary, and other objects at various stages of processing, marble roof tiles and pottery from the Sanctuary of the Springs at Fleri, dedications to the same sanctuary, and fragments of clay pipes of the ancient aqueduct, collected in the village area. With the help of information material, the collection presents the artistic production, daily work, economy, social welfare and cult practices of ancient Naxos.
