About the museum
The olive press of Engares is one of the oldest surviving on Naxos. It operated at least from the end of the 19th century and ground the olives of the village. It has belonged to the Lianos family for at least five generations and was recently renovated by the civil engineer Yiannis Protonotarios, who also took on the renovation of the surrounding area.
The original stone building has been remodelled in white Cycladic style. Authentic tools and production materials are displayed in the exhibition area, and visitors take part in a free guided tour and a short presentation on how olive oil used to be produced.
Next to the exhibition there is a tasting area with olive oils and olive products, while a café operates in the courtyard.
