About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Sami is housed in a building in the centre of the modern town, on Ioannis Metaxas Street, on the central square. The property, where the offices of the community of Sami used to be, was transferred in 2001 from the Public Property Service to the Ministry of Culture. The creation of the collection had long been a request of the residents, so that the finds of the rescue excavations in the area could be displayed.
The building was repaired, and the collection was organised by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kefalonia and Ithaca within ESPA programmes. In the surrounding area mosaic floors are displayed that were uncovered in the excavations of Sami and could not be preserved in place. The collection was inaugurated in August 2021.
The permanent exhibition presents the continuous settlement of Sami from the early Bronze Age to the early Byzantine period, with finds from the territory of the ancient city-state of Sami and from Fiskardo, where the ancient city of Panormos was located. The sections concern, among other things, water, everyday life, burial customs and mosaic floors, which reflect the art of mosaic in Roman and late Roman Sami.
