About the museum
The Folklore and Nautical Museum of Ithaca is housed in the building where the power station of Vathy once operated. The plant was donated to the island by G. K. Drakoulis and operated from 1923 to 1967, supplying electricity to Vathy and Perachori.
The museum opened to the public in 1997, with rich and varied material donated by Ithacans, to preserve the island’s cultural heritage. The exhibition space was upgraded and redesigned in 2012.
On the ground floor, the centuries-old maritime tradition of Ithaca is presented: paintings and photographs of Ithacan merchant ships, nautical instruments, uniforms and documents of the Merchant Marine School of Stathatos. Also on display are professional tools, church art, costumes, agricultural tools, musical instruments and embroidery, as well as a collection of gramophones donated by an Ithacan emigrant who had lived in Australia. One entire floor recreates a traditional Ithacan house, with furniture, everyday objects, clothes and jewellery, and there is also a loom, the Municipal Art Collection and copperplate engravings by Tischbein showing Homeric heroes.
