About the museum
The Naftiko Mouseio Samis was created by Sotiris Markatos, born in Sami and the son of a seaman. Fascinated by ships from childhood, he became a ship engineer and wanted to honour the shipbuilding and maritime history of the island. He founded the museum on the outskirts of Sami, on the main Sami–Argostoli road.
The museum displays dozens of ship models from the Greek and international shipbuilding tradition, covering 3,500 years. The vessels are between 1.20 m and about 4 m long, and most of them were built by the founder himself, with great attention to detail. A model of the Titanic stands out, which honours the victims of the wreck.
