About the museum
The Pylaros Olive Museum is located in the settlement of Makryotika, in the area of Pylaros on Kefalonia. It is housed in the old olive press of Agios Dimitrios, which the church of Agios Dimitrios made available to create the museum. The restoration works were funded by the LEADER+ programme, and the opening took place on 17 July 2010.
The two-storey olive-press building was constructed in the mid-19th century. After the devastating earthquakes of 1953 the upper floor collapsed; today the outer stone staircase and the mezzanine survive. The olive press operated until the 1960s and served the small local community.
The museum has preserved the original elements of the building and its equipment: millstones, the limba (press basin), the tsolia and the pithoi in which the oil was stored. A video presentation explains the process of olive oil production. The site also has a shop with souvenirs and olive oil products, and school visits are part of environmental education programmes.
