About the museum
The Museum of History and Art of the Municipality of the Holy City of Messolonghi is housed in a two-storey neoclassical building of 1931 in Botsari Square. It is dedicated to the history of Messolonghi and especially to the struggle and the Exodus of 1826.
The collection includes authentic paintings and copies with scenes of the Exodus, portraits of philhellenes and Greek military leaders, and authentic engravings of 1837 by the Englishman Friedel. Also on display are weapons of 1826, coins and medals, as well as plaster busts of the five prime ministers from Messolonghi.
Of particular interest are the objects and manuscripts of Lord Byron, accompanied by images of his two journeys to Greece, and the model of the marble statue of him, which is in Cambridge.
