About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Abdera opened in 2000 in the modern settlement of Abdera, in the Xanthi prefecture, and is one of the most important museums in Thrace. It presents the development of the city from its foundation in the 7th century BC to the 12th–13th century AD.
The aim of the exhibition is to show aspects of everyday life in the ancient city through useful objects uncovered in the excavations of the city and its necropoleis. The exhibits are arranged in three thematic sections: public life, private life and burial customs. They reflect the way of life of the Abderites, as well as the role of the city in Thrace and in the ancient Greek world.
The museum places particular emphasis on education and offers educational programmes.
