About the museum
The museum grew out of the activity of the young people of Nea Karvali, who founded the Stegi Politismou (Cultural Shelter) in 1981 and began collecting documents, books, photographs, costumes, icons and objects of everyday life of the refugees from Cappadocia. In 1990 the museum was founded to house the collection, and in 1995 the present building opened behind the Church of Agios Grigorios.
In 1997 the museum received the European Museum of the Year Award for the completeness of its collections and the uniqueness of its exhibits. It is a monographic museum of Greek-Cappadocian culture and comprises six sections in different rooms of the same building.
The display cases show men’s and women’s costumes, Cappadocian rugs and textiles, tools and utensils such as decorated lik-lik vessels for water and wine, and musical instruments such as the Cappadocian lyre (kemane). Important are the relics of the Cappadocian churches that the refugees brought with them in 1924, old newspapers, magazines and school books in Karamanlidika, that is, Turkish written in the Greek alphabet, as well as archaeological objects from the Hittite era. There is also a rare collection of books from the 14th to the 19th century. The museum runs educational programmes for pupils, mainly on the theme of rugs and their weaving.
