About the museum
The museum building was constructed at the end of the 19th century, in the Ottoman period, and housed the Ottoman administration building. It has two storeys with restrained neoclassical features. The idea of founding an archaeological museum there was first discussed in 1930. In 1939 the building was sold to the Pallimnian school fund on condition that it be donated to the state, and the first exhibition was housed there in 1961. In 1991 it was re-exhibited.
The strong earthquake of May 2014 caused serious damage to the building and to the exhibits on the second floor. A restoration and modernisation programme followed, with new display cases, access for people with disabilities and modern audiovisual media, financed by the Regional Operational Programme of the North Aegean. The new permanent exhibition was inaugurated in August 2025. It houses finds from Poliochni and Myrina, Koukonisi, Kabeirion and Ouriakos, private donations and a notable collection of sculptures. The first floor presents prehistory, with the settlement of Poliochni, and the second floor the historical periods. The archaic terracotta figurines of Sirens and Sphinxes are well known.
