About the museum
The Laografiko Mouseio Portianou was founded in 1995 in the village of Portianou on Limnos. It is housed in the former house of Vagiakos, which was bought by Vasilis Poriazis, president of the Association of Portianates of Limnos in Athens, Piraeus and surroundings. The objects were gathered with effort and affection by the residents, with the aim that the museum should become a place of memory, where older people remember the past and younger people learn the customs and traditions of their ancestors.
The building is a listed monument and a representative example of folk architecture on Limnos. The exhibition occupies the two floors of the building and the ground-floor annex in the courtyard, around 225 square metres in total.
The collection has been reorganised so that its contents communicate better, and the exhibits are accompanied by modern display media and audiovisual material. The thematic sections show how people on Limnos lived in earlier times: life at home, occupations, spiritual pursuits, customs and traditions.
