About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno presents its finds in a temporary exhibition in the church of Saint Francis, the katholikon (main church) of an old Franciscan monastery of the 16th century. The church was restored in 2003–2005, and the exhibition opened in August 2016.
The exhibition was created because of long-standing structural problems in the old museum, and it will operate until the new Archaeological Museum of Rethymno is completed. The display is organised in three sections, the prehistoric, the historical, and the Byzantine and post-Byzantine, with themes from public and private life.
The exhibits come from excavations throughout the prefecture and cover human presence from the Palaeolithic period to the Venetian rule. Among them are finds from ancient Eleftherna and objects of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, some of which were shown to the public for the first time.
