About the museum
The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is a non-profit private institution, founded in 1974 by Fali Vogiatzaki and Christoforos Stavroulakis, with the aim of researching and collecting historical and folklore material from Crete and especially from the prefecture of Rethymno. Its collections come from donations and purchases and include more than 5,000 objects.
The museum operates in a privately owned 17th-century Venetian building, donated by its president, which has been listed as a historic monument and is an example of an urban residence from the final phase of Venetian rule in Crete. The five rooms of the permanent exhibition present mainly objects of traditional craft and folk art: textiles, embroidery and lace, basketry and pottery, traditional tools for farming and bread-making, as well as the trades of the coppersmith, the saddler, the farrier and the knife-maker.
In a separate room there is an exhibition of urban folklore for Rethymno from 1898 to 1913, from the Cretan State to the Union with Greece. The museum also organises educational courses for school groups, exhibitions, lectures and publications.
