About the museum
The two-storey neoclassical building of the museum, with its marble windows and the imposing staircase guarded by two lions, was designed by the architect Ernst Ziller. It was first used as a hospital in 1913 and opened in 1986 as the Panarcadian Archaeological Museum.
At the entrance, visitors are greeted by a grave stele inscribed “Chaire Arkadia”, while in the garden grave stelae stand among rose bushes. The collections come from excavations at various sites in Arcadia and trace the region's history from the Neolithic period to Late Antiquity: from the prehistoric Sfakovouni and the Mycenaean cemetery of Palaiokastro to the powerful ancient cities of Mantinea, Tegea and Megalopolis.
