About the museum
The Tripoli branch of the War Museum began operating on 1 September 1999 and was inaugurated on 23 January 2000. It is one of the branches of the Athens War Museum, together with those of Thessaloniki, Nafplio, Kalamata, Chalkida and Rethymno.
The permanent exhibition covers the historical period from the Greek Revolution of 1821 to the liberation of the country from the German occupying forces in 1944 and is organised in chronological sections.
The first sections concern the Revolution of 1821, with works of art, manuscripts and weapons, the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, the Macedonian Struggle and the Balkan Wars. These are followed by the First World War and the Asia Minor Campaign, the Greco-Italian War of 1940–1941, the German invasion and the occupation, the operations of the Greek forces in North Africa, the Middle East and Rimini, and finally the Liberation.
An important place in the section on 1821 is held by the authentic letter of Theodoros Kolokotronis to the community elders of the province of Kalavryta in 1826, together with a copy of his death mask.
