About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Tegea first opened in 1909 and is one of the oldest in the Peloponnese. It was completely renovated and reopened in 2014. The traditional stone façade of the building gives no hint of its modern interior.
The exhibition tells the story of the birth and development of Tegea, the strongest city of ancient Arcadia, with finds from the prehistoric to the late Roman period. The emphasis is on the city’s sanctuaries and above all on the sanctuary of Alea Athena.
Standing out are the works of the Parian sculptor Skopas, who worked at the sanctuary, and the unique Arcadian herms, abstract representations of deities that the faithful dedicated. An important part of the visit consists of interactive digital applications based on information technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
