About the museum

The museum is housed in the church of the Virgin Antivouniotissa, which was probably built at the end of the 15th century and is one of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings in the town. It is a single-nave basilica with a timber roof, an exonarthex and a bell tower built into the south wall. Inside are preserved a carved wooden coffered ceiling with gilding, a stone templon and tombstones of Corfiot nobles and notables.

In 1979 the families who owned the church donated the building, with its relics and icons, to the Greek state, on condition that it operate as a museum. After restoration the museum opened in 1984, and a new phase of work was completed in 1994, when the icons were displayed again.

The exhibition contains around ninety portable icons from the second half of the 15th to the 19th century, as well as ecclesiastical relics. The icons show Corfu’s role in the development of church painting, especially after 1664, when many Cretan painters settled on the island. The works include the icon of the Virgin Hodegetria of Kastellanoi and a work by Michael Damaskinos.
