About the museum
The museum began as a small collection of icons and liturgical objects assembled by Metropolitan Iakovos Kleomvrotou. In 1978 it opened in its own building, opposite the church of Agios Therapon in Mytilene.
Among its best-known holdings are portable icons from the 13th century onwards, some of them about two metres high. The museum also displays carved wooden doors of iconostases, vestments, manuscripts, liturgical vessels and small ecclesiastical objects.
