About the museum

The Museum-Library of Stratis Eleftheriadis – Tériade is located in Vareia, the native village of the publisher and art critic, near Mytilene. It opened its rooms to the public in August 1979 and resulted from a donation by Stratis Eleftheriadis himself. The content and the building were shaped according to his own idea and supervision, with the aim of presenting his publishing work as a whole and creating a museum that combines text and image.

The permanent exhibition is housed in a two-storey building and includes copies of the magazine VERVE, which was published from 1937 to 1960, and of the “Great Books”, illustrated editions with lithographs by artists such as Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, Léger and Le Corbusier. Lithographs from the books and copies of medieval manuscripts are also exhibited.

The museum also houses part of the collection of works that Tériade gathered, mainly by Greek artists, such as Theophilos and Tsarouchis. In addition to the permanent exhibition, it organises retrospective art exhibitions, publications and cultural events. Next to it is the Mouseio Theophilou.
