Theophilos Museum

About the museum

The Theophilos Museum is located in Vareia, near Mytilene, in the village where the folk painter Theophilos Chatzimichail was born and spent his childhood. Theophilos lived as a wanderer, from Smyrna to Pelion, and returned for good to Mytilene around 1926. There he was discovered by the publisher and art critic Stratis Eleftheriadis (Teriade), who made him known and commissioned many works from him.

The museum was founded in 1964, and the building, which was constructed in an olive grove, was donated by Teriade to the Municipality of Mytilene. In 1965 Teriade donated 86 paintings by Theophilos from his private collection to the municipality, and since then the museum has operated as a municipal museum.

The paintings are displayed in successive rooms and belong to the mature period of the painter. The subjects come from Greek history, mythology and folk life, and many depict Lesbos at the beginning of the 20th century, with landscapes and farm work. Next to the museum is the Museum-Library of Stratis Eleftheriadis – Tériade.
