About the museum
The National Glyptotheque is housed in two buildings of the former royal stables in the Alsos Stratou (Army Grove) in Goudi, and also occupies an outdoor area of 6.5 stremmata, where a sculpture park with large works is located. The buildings were leased by the Ministry of National Defence, renovated with EU funds and converted into exhibition spaces through a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
The Glyptotheque opened on 26 July 2004 with a retrospective exhibition of Henry Moore and monumental wooden sculptures by Christos Kapralos. On 27 June 2006 the permanent exhibition of Modern Greek Sculpture was inaugurated, presenting for the first time in a separate space a comprehensive picture of the sculpture collection of the National Gallery.
The exhibition consists of ten sections that trace the beginnings and development of Modern Greek sculpture up to the present, from folk and Ionian sculpture to modernism and abstraction. Wall texts, digital information stations and QR codes provide information on each sculpture. Six works by important foreign sculptors are also displayed at the entrance.
