About the museum
The National Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1997 as a private-law legal entity under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and began operating in 2000. For years it was temporarily housed in the Megaro Mousikis (Athens Concert Hall), the Athens School of Fine Arts and part of the Athens Odeon.
Its permanent home is the former Fix factory on Syngrou Avenue, whose reconstruction was completed in February 2014. The museum moved there in May 2015 and has been fully open to the public since February 2020, with funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for the fitting-out of the spaces.
The collection includes works by Greek and foreign artists in a variety of media: painting, sculpture, video, installations, photography, printmaking and industrial design. The donation of the Dimitris Daskalopoulos Collection, with 136 works by 82 artists, is the largest donation the museum has received.
