About the museum
The first museum for the Acropolis finds was founded in 1865 southeast of the Parthenon and completed in 1874 to designs by Panagis Kalkos. A smaller annex of 1888 housed antiquities of secondary importance, and after the Second World War the museum was extended, the new exhibition being completed in 1964. Over time, however, the site became far too small for the finds.
The idea of a new museum matured from 1974. Several competitions were cancelled, until the 2001 competition selected the design of the Swiss-French architect Bernard Tschumi, in collaboration with Michalis Fotiadis. The building was erected on the Makrygianni plot, below the Acropolis, and its foundations were laid in 2003.
The new Acropolis Museum was inaugurated on 20 June 2009 and opened to the public the following day. The exhibition begins with finds from the slopes of the Acropolis, continues with antiquities from the Mycenaean to the early Classical period and culminates in the Parthenon gallery on the top floor. The excavation site beneath the building has been open to visitors since the end of 2011.
