About the museum
The museum opened in summer 1988 and presents life on a farmstead of the past. Its aim is to help younger generations understand their identity and to provide material for folklorists and ethnologists.
The farmstead consists of three main areas: the house, the olive press with the cheese dairy, and the bread oven. The oldest building is thought to date from the 17th century. The walls are dry-stone and the roofs were built using traditional Cycladic techniques. The complex also includes a sheepfold for animals, cisterns, a threshing floor, a laundry room and a henhouse, and a 19th-century dwelling with three rooms was added later.
Vessels of everyday life, local costumes, an old loom, pithoi and remains of an olive press are on display. There is also a library on traditional occupations. On the threshing floor there is an open-air theatre with views of the island and the sea.
